JANICE WONG offers introductory and intermediate level classes in Drawing, Painting, Mixed Media and the Art of the Monotype.

CLASSES are taught at Janice Wong's Studio, 1707 Fir Street, located in Kitsilano, just around the sea wall walk from Granville Island.
Classes are held every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evening,
7 to 9.30 pm.

D r a w i n g : E x p l o r a t i o n s | Introductory level
The emphasis is on observation, exploration and the development of fundamental skills. In addition to gaining a greater trust of their own unique expression, students will explore traditional drawing concerns of line, shape, volume, light, space, proportion, composition. Classes include weekly slide presentations which cover the history of drawing, from early cave drawings to contemporary practise.

D r a w i n g : E x p l o r a t i o n s | Intermediate Level
This 8 week course builds upon the skills gained in the Introductory level class. It is also suitable for anyone with basic drawing skills. Again, the emphasis is on exploration. Through a series of exercises, students will acquire greater confidence in their drawing skills, enabling them to translate what they see and to express ideas in a more meaningful way. While continuing to develop fundamental drawing skills, (line, shape, volume, light, space, proportion, composition), students will also experiment with a broad range of ideas, materials and tools. Slide presentations and informal group critiques will be a part of this course.

D r a w i n g : T u t o r i a l / W o r k s h o p : Ongoing
Perfect for students who want to ‘keep learning’, this workshop is open to students of all levels of skill. The workshop is aimed at providing an informal atmosphere that encourages focus, and a commitment to ongoing exploration.This format will enable people to explore a variety of mediums and 2D solutions. With guidance and input both from myself and from the group, participants will work at their own pace, choosing their mediums and specific focus. In this manner, participants will help to form both the format and the tone of the workshops.
A list of mediums to be explored may include:
colour pencil
water soluble colour pencil
chalk pastel
oil pastel
crayon — wax and water soluble
water soluble graphite pencil
graphite
charcoal
collage
mixed media
watercolour
Gouache
ink — pen and ink / ink wash
oil bars

exploration of particular papers/drawing surfaces
simple printmaking procedures (monotype, collagraph, relief)

Weekly projects will be encouraged. The group may choose to work outdoors or at specific sites.
Informal individual and group critiques will be arranged.
Sessions are ongoing, running 10 weeks at a time,
with a short break between sessions.

Biography

Janice Wong studied at the University of Saskatchewan and received her B.F.A. with Distinction, honours in painting, from the Alberta Institute of Art and Design. In addition to her studio work, from 1991 to 2002, she taught Drawing with the Vancouver School Board Continuing Education,
V.S.B. Seniors Programs, V.S.B. Summer Centre of the Arts, Britannia Summer Institute of the Arts, Basic Inquiry, West Point Grey Community Education, Native Education Centre and has been teaching private studio sessions from 1994 to present. Her work is exhibited and collected nationally and internationally in Corporate, Public and Private collections.
Janice works as a painter, printmaker and photographer.
